Veterans Day stems from the pre-World War II holiday, Armistice Day. The first organized Veteran’s Day was organized by Raymond Weeks in Birmingham, Alabama, and led to the official change to Veterans Day by a bill passed in 1954 and signed by President Eisenhower. National ceremonies are held at Arlington National Cemetery and include a combined color guard representing all military services executing a “Present Arms” at the Tomb of the Unknowns at 11 am. Regional sites are chosen around the United States each year that hold concurrent ceremonies. You can generally stream the national ceremony online and or watch it on CSPAN.

A Special Veteran’s Day Note
Veteran’s Day holds a very special place in my heart as my grandpa, father-in-law, and three of my husband’s grandparents proudly served. I am grateful for all veterans, especially my extended family and friends, and I will raise my daughter knowing that importance, too.
