It’s August! Find 31 Things to Do All Month Long!

July flew by and we’re ready to close out the summer with loads of fun this August! Here is a list of things to do this month that are FREE or inexpensive for your family.

  1. Kites Over Lake Michigan – Don’t miss a sky full of amazing kites in Two Rivers!
  2. Burger Fest in Seymour – World’s Largest Hamburger Parade, Bun Run, Kids’ Run, music, kids’ games, the Burger Eating Contest, Giant Ketchup Slide, car show, hot air balloons and more August 13-14.
  3. Hit up a fair! There are still some county fairs in August (Winnebago County August 4-8 and Calumet County in September), or head the Wisconsin State Fair August 5-15.
  4. Hit the beach! – There are only so many weeks of potential beach days in Wisconsin and we’re reaching the end. Don’t let summer slip by without spending a day at a gorgeous beach.
  5. Indulge in the summer must-have … ice cream! Find 60+ places to find the best ice cream treats.
  6. So many fruits and vegetables are at their peak this month! The markets will be full of great finds. Find a Farmers Market Schedule here.
  7. Spend some late summer exploration time at one of the area’s nature centers! They’re perfect for hot days with lots to explore!
  8. Discover a new park. We have lots of ideas for where to find slides, climbing, and even Pokestops in our Parks Guide!
  9. Pose in front of one of the awesome murals in Northeast Wisconsin! Tag #gvkmuralhunt to share your adventure!
  10. Paint some rocks or go rock hunting and explore the Fox Cities.
  11. Hike and find a waterfall. We love that there are so many opportunities to explore that are 2 hours or less away! Check out our recommendations.
  12. Skip making dinner and head to a drive-in! You’re never cooler than when you say yes to cheese curds and ice cream. 
  13. Hike in the woods, explore an amazing playground, soak up some summer sun, or explore a museum. Hit the road and check out one of these fun road trips.
  14. You’re about two hours away from a day of adventure in Wausau
  15. There’s something truly magical about sculptures in the woods. Check out Stevens Point Sculpture Park and swing by our favorite ice cream spot before you head home!
  16. Start with avocado fries and make your way to Zoreo Ice Cream as you eat through our A-Z list of local summer treats!
  17. Get up close with snakes, spiders, reptiles, and a visiting kangaroo at Mtoxins in Oshkosh!
  18. Watch soda being bottled the old-fashioned way at Twig’s Soda Bottling
  19. We’re so lucky to be in a location that is near some amazing state parks. A state parks sticker pass is required, but daily passes are available again for 2021. Pack a picnic and explore the 15 Awesome State Parks Less than 2 Hours from Appleton.
  20. August can be so hot, but it is always cooler in a cave! Explore the natural beauty and open to the public cave at Cherney Maribel Caves County Park.
  21. A free zoo, the beach, lighthouses, and delish ice cream await your visit in Manitowoc!
  22. Menominee Park also has a free zoo and beach and you can also explore the new playground and take a ride on a train!
  23. Go hiking in a new spot with these 11 Worth the Drive Hiking Trails that will have you only about an hour away from Appleton.
  24. Stroll down a path, hike up a hill, discover a waterfall, and watch for birds at these 13 Green Bay Area Family-Friendly Nature Trails for Biking, Walking, and Hiking.
  25. Head to Two Rivers to hang out with alpacas!
  26. Was it even summer if you didn’t head to Door County for at least a day? Find the places we love to visit with our kids in tow. 
  27. Engage with Nature! There are so many changes taking place around us as the summer hits its peak and begins to fade through the month of August. Take time to slow down and check out what is happening all around us.
