Tips for Visiting Farmers’ Markets

  • Bring some cash. Some vendors do not have the ability to run a credit or debit card.
  • EBT can be used at many farmers markets find more information here: .dhs.wisconsin.gov
  • Bring along reusable bags to carry your veg and treats. (For Summer 2020, most markets ask that you leave your reusable bags at home.)
  • Also, bring along a wagon to carry those bags and your kids.
    • Don’t have one? Some markets have a limited number of wagons available to borrow. (Note: These may not be available for Summer 2020.)
  • Can’t find something you were hoping for? Ask a farmer! It may be past season or not quite time yet. They’ll know when you should look for those perfect peaches or berries!
  • Arriving early or near the end of the bigger and busier markets will mean less crowding and more time to chat with farmers and vendors.
  • Get yourself some flowers, you deserve them!

What to expect Summer 2020 at the farmers’ markets:

Many markets have made changes to have safe farmers’ markets for shoppers and vendors alike. Check specific guidelines for the market you’re attending, but generally:

  • Most markets will not have tables, benches, etc out for enjoying treats at the market.
  • No samples.
  • Do not bring reusable bags.
  • Minimize the number of people going to the market from your household.
  • Wear a mask.
  • Maintain 6 feet of distance from others.
  • Many vendors will take care of handling the products throughout your transaction and may have barrier tables between customers and their products to minimize contact.
  • Handwashing or sanitizing stations will be available.
  • Fewer vendors than a non-pandemic market season will likely be present.
  • Some markets will offer pre-order and pick-up.
  • There will not be entertainment at most markets.
  • As with all activities this summer, stay home if you are sick and remember to arrive with patience and kindness in mind.

The Wednesday market in downtown Appleton is actually located in Houdini Plaza. I work for Appleton Downtown Inc. with the farm markets.

FYI — On Monday July 31, 2017 around 1:30 PM tried to go to the Farmer’s Market at Festival in Neenah…. none going on. I think that listing is no longer accurate.
