Weekend Family Getaway: The Wilderness Resort

If you are anything like our family, vacations or even weekend getaways, are sometimes hard to squeeze in with busy schedules and tight family budgets. We had the opportunity to sneak away to Wisconsin Dells and we were NOT disappointed. It was our family’s first trip to the Dells. My husband and our two daughters, ages 3 and 18 months and a fully packed van headed out for a weekend getaway courtesy of the Wilderness Resort.

Just a short 2-hour drive from Appleton, the Wilderness Resort is located in Wisconsin Dells. There is definitely something for everyone. The main hotel has 3 guest exclusive waterpark resorts and the entire resort has 4 indoor and 4 outdoor waterparks making it America’s largest waterpark resort. If you need a break from the water they also have a spa, a family golf course and championship golf course, zip lining, indoor play park, indoor ropes course, laser tag, laser maze, indoor and outdoor go-carts, bumper boats, 3 huge arcades, pottery studio, many dining options and more. With little ones and unfamiliar with the area we loved having everything in one place. The shuttle service was super convenient and very friendly.

I could go on and on about the friendly staff, the lovely families we met, our nice room, all the new attractions, and the water fun, but you should probably just check it out yourself. So I decided to focus on our 4 favorite things about the Wilderness that made our stay perfect with little ones.

Cubby’s Cove
We enjoyed all the waterparks but really appreciated sneaking away to Cubby’s Cove at the Wilderness on the Lake. This waterpark was perfect for our toddlers, an interactive, multi-level play structure with slides and splash pads. We could see them throughout the whole area and our oldest could explore by herself, without giving her Mom (me!) a panic attach. This waterpark also had a beautiful infinity hot tub overlooking the lake. We spent the majority of our time here.

The Wild Canyon Café
Our girls are very picky eaters and this can make eating away from home very frustrating. After a long day of swimming the Wild Canyon Café was the perfect dining option for us, and the best thing about it… kids eat free with an adult buffet purchase. We found something for everyone and it was yummy!WildCanonAdj

Timberland Play Park
We actually stumbled across this place on Sunday morning. It was a nice break from swimming and because we were there right after they opened we had the whole place to ourselves and it was free! A 30,000 square-foot, 4 story interactive area was large enough for Dad to tag along curious little ones. The girls loved running around and chasing after the balls, crawling through the obstacles and the slides. There was also a nice toddler crawl zone with foam that was nice for our youngest. Don’t forget socks (but if you do, like we did, they had a vending machine full of them)!

TimberlandadjYukon Yogurt
This was a great and healthy snack after swimming. There were lots of frozen yogurt flavors and delicious toppings. We found a table nearby to enjoy and watch the baseball game. It was quiet and we were able to relax and enjoy our treat! Icecream

We will definitely be heading back to the Wilderness with our family!

(We also ordered pizza from Moosejaw and delivered to our room – very good – and stopped at the Disney store at the Outlet Mall for souvenirs).
