Mobile Creativity Lab Coming to Appleton, Oshkosh and Green Bay this Summer!

Einstein's Sandbox
Einstein's Sandbox

This summer, a mobile creativity lab will be hitting the road for the first time with projects, challenges, and opportunities to explore with new tools and materials. Einstein’s Sandbox puts the Einstein Project on wheels and in parks across Northeast Wisconsin to promote quality learning opportunities in science, technology, engineering, aesthetics, and math.

Each month, kids ages 4 and older will be invited to explore for two hours at each location. The youngest creators will enjoy open-ended design and building with tinker pile supplies. Those ready for more direction can check out challenges with provided materials and instructions for a build based on the monthly theme. Kids in middle school and up can take on the challenge of a Creativity Scrimmage and team up to think critically and create solutions to a design challenge.

We talked with Dennis Rockhill from the Einstein Project about what we can expect at these park dates:

GVK: Are families able to drop in anytime during the 2-hour session or do projects take the full two hours?

Dennis: They can drop by anytime and some of the projects take longer than others – so I would plan for a minimum of 20 – 30 minutes.

Can projects carry over from week to week if families transport them?

Dennis: We visit each park once a month June, July, and August. Each month has a different theme and project. But if a family met us at another park the same month, they could certainly continue their project!

Can siblings work on projects together?

Dennis: Absolutely! We encourage collaboration. We will also have Creativity Scrimmages for groups that want to take on a design challenge together.

Anything else families should know?

Dennis: We’ll have a range of projects/activities that go from open-ended tinkering to step-by-step builds. We also have a project planned that will allow kids to design digitally and output to a laser cutter on board the makerspace truck!
