Autism Society of the Fox Valley

autism acceptance

What is autism?

Autism is a lifelong neurological disorder that significantly affects how a person perceives the world, interacts with other people, and communicates. It is often referred to as a spectrum disorder, meaning the symptoms and characteristics of autism can present themselves in a wide variety of combinations, from mild to severe.

According to the CDC autism affects approximately 1 out of every 68 children born today. Autism is four times more prevalent in boys than in girls and knows no racial, ethnic or social boundaries. There is no single, specific cause of autism. In many families there appears to be a pattern of autism or related disabilities – which suggests there is a genetic basis to the disorder – although no single gene has been directly linked to autism. Early diagnosis, intervention, and a system of support are vital to the future development of the child.

Who is The Autism Society of the Fox Valley (ASFV)?

ASFV was established in 1989 and is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization serving the following Wisconsin counties – Calumet, Fond du Lac, Outagamie, Waupaca and Winnebago. Our mission is to provide information and referral, advocacy, public awareness, education and support for individuals with autism and the families, professionals and others who support them.

Social Outings

ASFV sponsors social outings for three age groups:

  • The Hanging Out Group for Kids, ages 7-12
  • The Teen Group, ages 13-20
  • Adult Group

Our family outings are very well-attended and give the parents a chance to network and feel supported. Another way parents can meet that need to connect with other parents is at ASFV’s monthly parent support group meetings held the first Sunday evening of each month.

Education is another very important aspect of ASFV’s mission. Parent/Educator workshops are offered several times per year free of charge for the community. Education consultants and other speakers are brought in to cover a wide range of important topics, including supports/technology in the classroom, recreational opportunities in the community, financial planning for the future, job training options for teens/adults, understanding behavioral issues at school and in the home, and many others.

ASFV offers scholarships to parents, teachers and individuals on the autism spectrum to attend the Autism Society of WI state conference or attend educational programs. We also offer safety scholarships to help defray the cost of home modifications. Information can be obtained by emailing

Fundraising & Donations

As a volunteer-only organization, ASFV relies entirely on fundraising and donations to provide all of these activities. The first Saturday of each June ASFV holds its largest fundraiser, a golf outing at Irish Waters in Freedom. Information about the golf outing can be obtained by emailing ASFV also can be found working hard at their Octoberfest food booth selling delicious items from the grill in Appleton each September.
